Here's another great picture that Johnny Bernardo sent me
several years ago:

Lenn Levene, "Toby" Tobias, Ammon Balaster on motorcycle, Penrose Landis, and
Joe Butch
I think this might be about 1925 and that's my Dad, an old Italian sitting on an
old Indian motorcycle. I think it's an Indian Chief
Does anybody recognize where this was taken. It looks like a speakeasy
with shuttered windows and a bouncer at the door in the background.
And who is Joe Butch? It is interesting to note that it
is actually a post card photo (see the back side).
It's a great old picture. Thanks, John

wow,,,,, i can imagine the Teachers at Annville elementary school trying to pronounce that name!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Do you know the genesis of AMMON?? Probably came from a teacher. huh? They had a difficult time forcing themselves to prounounce "foreign" names One teacher told me that they were fearful of walking down Queen Street because we were all Cathloics,, and Democrats!!!!!!!!!! (my father was NEVER a democrat!!) This is the way it was, way back when.., believe it or not.... There was one family on West Queen Street who called us names walking to school past their house............,,,,,, names like WOP,, Daigo,, Garlic Snapper,, Greasers,, etc etc........ They were difficult times growing up as a "minority"... But that's what we were.. we were different,, our names ended with a vowel,, and we were Catholics. and some of us had dark hair and darker complexions... BUT,, we made it,, didn't we??. Those painful experiences probably made us more determined to succeed.................Thank God times have changed. and that bigotry is history.......................................John

pictures look great, Dr. Pooge...... You are a genius!!. On that Bernardo family picure, the Witner's outhouse appears in the rear of th upper left corner of the picture. There are still couple of outhouses standing in Annville!! Also, on that picture, I think Stella and Mary both made their First Holy Communion,, with their white dresses and bonnets on!! And it looks as though I really didn't want to hold Eddie's hand!!...I can't seem to loate your address again, dr. Pooge.. Please send it, and i'll WRITE IT in my address book!.. THANKS....ciao John
Hi John,
Thanks for that feedback on the picture viewing. Often I just don't know so it's good to hear that it looks good.
That is a great picture of your family with all the kids in line and the pictures of your old house are wonderful. I always admired that house and I still do. I wish someone would fix it up. It's a great stone structure and I'm sure it's very old. Do you have any idea how old it is. Is there a date stone on it or anything?

DR POOGE.... THANKS.. I MAILED SOME MORE PICTURES TODAY.. YOU SHOULD HAVE THEM IN A COUPLE DAYS... THE OLD HOUISE,, AT 539 WEST QUEEN STREET WAS PROBABLY BUILT SOMETIME IN THE LATE 1700'S.. IM NOT SURE,, BUT DORIS MILLER FLORY, WHO IS A HISTORIAN IN ANNVILLE PROBABLY KNOWS,, I'LL TRY T FIND OUT..WHAT A WONDERFUL TRIBUTE TO THE PEOPLE OF OLD WEST ANNVILLE,,,,,, I WISH SOME OF THE OLD TIMERS WERE STILL LIVING TO OFFER THEIR TWO CENTS!!... I SURE MISS THE "GOOD OLD DAYS" THERE!!CIAO, JOHNYea, the late 1700's sounds about right. That makes it one of the oldest houses in Annville. It should be preserved as an historical building.
You know the house I was born in on Cherry Street where Mom still lives used to be an old school house. It was built around 1800.
